How do I make a Kentucky derby hat?

I'm customary to a tea party and need a big derby style hat. I don't want to pay a ton of money so I'd like to take to one's heels one. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on how to go about doing this?
Find a extensive-brimmed straw hat and lots of decorations you might like, like flowers, humbug birds, etc. Since it's for a tea party, try finding a toy tea set and incorporate that! Also use fabric, unmixed and opaque, and ribbons. Use your imagination!
