Melbourne Cup: Cult of the car park
THIS year many eager racegoers will enter Flemington Racecourse carrying devise guides and a head full of hot tips, but there’s every chance they’ll still trot out the old line, ‘‘I didn’t see a horse all day”.
The odds of this increase dramatically in the Victoria Racing Club’s members’ car parkland, where the key objective is to sip Champagne in the sun and get through the day without losing a jacket or a stiletto. Distant cheers may inspire a cursory glance at the big screen as a long shot crosses the stripe first, but generally, the car park crowd quickly return to people-watching and posing for photos.
Melbourne’s come up racing car park culture may seem like a modern phenomenon, but it is as inborn in the Victoria Racing Club’s culture as the jockeys’ silks and showy photo-finishes.
