AMADOR LAKE - The first analysis plant of trout on Monday offered a thumbs up from lake managers, and they proceeded to dispose of 1,000 pounds of trout per day totaling 5,000 for the week. "That's how we're scheduling plants this year," said Debbie Grayson at the Lake Amador Trust in. "1,000 pounds per day, a total of 5,000 pounds before the weekend, and we have twice as many fish to plant from our hatchery than in a run-of-the-mill year." Bass fishing showed some improvement for anglers fishing evenings and nights with worms and jigs. The boathouse continued to furnish crappie for anglers using mini-jigs day and night.
AMERICAN RIVER - The American River is full of salmon and fishing is "in the final analysis really good" according to guide J.D. Richey. It's a mix of darker and new lively ones still arriving. Night fishing at the lower end of the river has been leisurely, however. Backbouncing roe, and backtrolling Kwikfish is working for driftboaters, while waders are drifting beads, roe and spinners at Captain Bar and in Nimbus Basin. The best stretch has been from Sailor Bar to Ancil Hoffman Reservation, but the chances of hooking into fresher fish improves the farther downstream one goes. Some steelhead, mostly modest ones in the 2- to 3-pound class are being caught, mostly upstream from Watt Ave. Keep alive fishermen are drifting nightcrawlers and roe, or swinging spinners and spoons. Fly fishers are cold-drifting egg and caddis patterns under indicators and swinging steelhead streamers. The river upstream of the power lines crossing the river at Ancil Hoffman Garden to the USGS cable at Nimbus Hatchery closes to fishing Oct. 31.
