Why did so many people wear such gaudy hats at the royal wedding?

I denote, they looked like they had things and fruits growing from their heads. I by a hair's breadth don't get it... Is there a meaning for it, or do they just think that looks pulling?

Because we Brits have no the rage sense and enjoy looking like clowns and fools (ethical consider the antler hat that Beatrice wore to the wedding -- egads!).
