why do american soldiers or marines sometimes have a backward black flag patch?

the why and wherefore its a gray/black is because when your looking threw you night goggles (nvg) it acts as a deliberating. its for use in a war zone. so when you look threw your nvg's you can see who friendlies an whose not.
